According to sources close to the team, Mitchell Robinson is set to return to action this weekend as the New York Knicks hit the road for a two-game series against the Memphis Grizzlies and Miami Heat. This news comes from SNY NBA Insider Ian Begley, who has been following Robinson's recovery closely.
Robinson has been sidelined since Game 1 of New York’s second-round series loss to the Pacers last season.
The big man underwent surgery to repair a foot injury this offseason, and his timeline for a return has been very vague. New York has been taking a cautious approach over the past few weeks to ensure that he will be 100 percent healthy when he does return.
Robinson has been progressing well in practice after being cleared for contact at the beginning of the month, and it appears that he is now ready to finally make his way off the injury report and back onto the court.
His return certainly comes at a perfect time for New York, as their center depth is about to be put to the test.
They were already playing shorthanded with All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns dealing with a knee issue and now rookie center Ariel Hukporti is expected to be sidelined for several weeks with a suspected torn meniscus.
It may take Robinson some time to get into a rhythm and regain his conditioning, but there's no denying that having him back will be a huge boost on both ends of the court.
Prior to the injury, the 26-year-old was averaging 5.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game.
