New Delhi: Indian cricket team’s legendary captain Rohit Sharma has made a surprising announcement regarding his retirement from T20 cricket after the T20 World Cup 2024. Despite leading India to victory in the tournament, Rohit declared that he will no longer be playing T20 cricket at the international level. Many speculated that age might have been a factor in his decision to retire from the shortest format of the game, but Rohit has now revealed the true reason behind his retirement.

It was under Rohit’s captaincy that India won the T20 World Cup 2024, jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA. Team India was able to lift this trophy after 17 years. After this, Rohit and Virat Kohli announced their retirement from T20 International.

This is the reason for retirement:

Rohit recently gave an interview in which he talked about his decision to retire. When the anchor asked him if he announced his retirement from T20 International due to increasing age? On this, Rohit said, “No, no. I retired from T20 International because my time was up. I enjoy playing this format. I played for 17 years. When you win the World Cup, it is the right time to move forward. You can look at some different things. There are many good players who can do well for India.”

“So, that was not because I felt anything. I just felt it was the right time. I can still play all three formats easily. That’s why I say that fitness is in your mind and how you train it. I believe everything is in the mind, I have a lot of self-belief because I know I can control my mind. It’s not easy, but I know most of the times, I can do that. If you tell your body you’re young, you can do that.” he added.

Eyes on the ICC Champions Trophy 2025:

Rohit is captaining India in ODIs and Tests. His eyes will be on the Champions Trophy to be held next year. Team India has not won the Champions Trophy since 2013. In 2017, India reached the final but lost to Pakistan. This time Rohit will try to win this title. Rohit will also want to make India win the ICC Test Championship where India has faced defeat in the final twice.

Currently, Rohit Sharma is in action against Bangladesh in a two-Test series. Rohit’s upcoming captaincy assignments include a three-Test series against New Zealand and a blockbuster Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
