New Delhi: Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has expressed his admiration for Indian cricket star Virat Kohli, comparing him to football icons Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. According to Amir, Kohli is a 'complete package' just like Ronaldo and Messi, and is admired by people for his lifestyle both on and off the field.
On Sunday, February 23, Kohli bounced back from a lean patch to score an unbroken century, leading India to a six-wicket win over their arch-nemesis Pakistan.
This marked Kohli’s 51st century in One Day Internationals and his 82nd across all formats, as India secured their spot in the semifinals with a second consecutive win.
“Why do people love Ronaldo? Why do they love Messi? If I talk about Ronaldo, especially, look at his lifestyle. Look at his charity work, his work ethic and his fitness. He is a complete package. Likewise, Virat Kohli is a complete package,” Amir was quoted as saying by Sports Tak.
“Why is he a role model for many, even in Pakistan? The country doesn’t matter. Whether he is from Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, or England role model can be from anywhere,” Amir added.
The ex-Pakistan player also lauded Kohli for his unwavering dedication to his craft, regardless of his form, even at the age of 36.
“Virat Kohli is a player for whom age doesn’t matter. His work ethic doesn’t change depending on his form. He came 90 minutes before for training on the eve of the India vs Pakistan match,” Amir pointed out.
Kohli has impressive stats in the current prestigious ICC tournament, having scored 651 runs at an exceptional average of 93. His next appearance will be when India faces New Zealand in their final group match on Sunday, March 2.
Meanwhile, the Indian squad had an intense practice session in Dubai on Wednesday, with Kohli dedicating significant time to facing spinners. Bowling coach Morne Morkel rejoined the team after dealing with a personal matter back home.
During the session, Kohli not only faced Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, and Ravindra Jadeja but also spent over 30 minutes practicing with the net bowlers in preparation for the New Zealand match.
